The People Who Wanted to Be Equal

In the land of the twenty-first century, people saw differences in the world and said that means life is unfair.

So they made their speeches, passed some laws, and took money from the rich and gave to the poor.

But that was not enough.

They surgically shortened the shins of the tall and lengthened the legs of the short.

But that was not enough.

They removed an eye from those with two, and gave it to the blind.

But that was not enough.

And on and on it went. Difference after difference was fixed, advantage after advantage removed, until one day at last, everyone was equal—and all diversity in the world was gone.

Then the people who saw the differences in the world and said that means life is unfair all died.

But no one noticed, no one cared.

Life was still unfair.
